Nostalgic Heritage along the river, Dokkumer Ee. Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and discover a hidden gem along the Dokkumer Ee, connecting Leeuwarden with Dokkum. In this idyllic setting stands a carefully renovated farmhouse, a former toll House from 1900, offering a perfect balance between historic charm and contemporary comfort. Under the inspired guidance of architect Bart Zantman, the owners brought this project to life in 2021, respecting the past while looking towards the future. Their vision reflects a deep respect for the building’s original character, enriched with modern nuances.
This unique farmhouse, situated on a generous plot of 4,715 m² amidst expansive meadows, welcomes visitors with a broad, gravel-covered driveway accommodating six cars. An additional canopy, equipped with solar panels, provides space for another six vehicles. It serves as an introduction to a world where history and modernity coexist harmoniously.
Upon entry, the spacious and bright foyer immediately catches the eye, featuring a practical poured floor that adorns the entire ground floor. The foyer leads to useful spaces such as the utility room and a fitness area, where a large floor-to-ceiling window offers an unobstructed view of the outside world. The double glass pivot doors, executed in black steel, then lead to an impressive hall bathed in natural light, connecting the various spaces.
The playroom, which can also serve as an office, and the cinema room with luxurious lounge seating offer entertainment and comfort. The living room, where tranquility and a relaxed atmosphere prevail, retains the original beam structures and is complemented by a gas fireplace that atmospherically separates the sitting and lounge areas.
Now, the kitchen: the beating heart of the home, not just a space for cooking but a center of conviviality and hospitality. Despite its impressive dimensions, including a dining table six meters long, this space exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. With skylights and large windows, the kitchen is bathed in natural light, while the large glass folding wall offers a unique indoor-outdoor experience. The central kitchen island ensures culinary creativity, with ample workspace and state-of-the-art equipment within reach.
The upper floors reveal a private sanctuary, where each room has its own unique charm. On the first floor, we find a master bedroom, complete with an en-suite bathroom bathed in light thanks to a generous dormer window, and four additional bedrooms. This floor also features two additional bathrooms, each equipped with high-quality sanitary ware, to ensure comfort and convenience for all residents and guests. The second floor, accessed via a staircase that elegantly combines elegance with functionality, offers not only substantial storage space but also two additional bedrooms. One of these is equipped with a unique sleeping loft, ingeniously utilizing the height to create a dreamlike sleeping experience. Additionally, this floor is enriched with a separate toilet.
The outdoor space pays tribute to outdoor living, with amenities such as hot tubs, a sauna, and an extensive playground, all designed to maximize enjoyment of the landscape. After the renovation, the farmhouse was given the fitting name “Farmhouse The Great Love” a name reflecting love for nature, history, and the art of living.
